Is ChatGPT sending you traffic? How to check

October 27, 2026 · 4 min read · Plainview team

People increasingly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Copilot for recommendations instead of searching Google. When those answers include links, some of those people click through to your site.

Why it’s easy to miss

In many analytics tools, AI traffic gets lumped into “referral” or “direct”. Referral traffic from chatgpt.com sits next to a link from a local directory, and some AI apps send no referrer at all.

How to spot it

Look for referrers like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com, and for utm_source=chatgpt.com on landing URLs. Plainview groups all of these into one channel called AI assistants, so you can see the total at a glance.

Why it’s worth watching

Visitors from AI assistants have usually already asked a specific question and been pointed to you as an answer. On many sites they convert better than search visitors. Compare conversion rate by channel and see if that’s true for you.

How to get more of it

AI assistants tend to cite pages that answer a question clearly: pricing pages, comparison pages, guides with specific numbers. Make sure your key pages say plainly what you do, where, and for how much.
